What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

This lesson provides young mathematicians with an opportunity to read and interpret a Carroll Diagram. During this lesson children will sort and classify animals in the Carroll diagram according to the given characteristics.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Step 1: Watch the read-aloud non-fiction story ‘Some Pets

Step 2:  Next, help your child read the four characteristics of the Carroll diagram. Discuss with your child examples of animals which go in each section.  Then encourage your child to sort animals found in the story (click HERE to see poster) by writing their names in the corresponding section of the Carroll diagram.

Optional:  If your child encounters problems when sorting animal pictures in the Carroll Diagram, you are encouraged to have your child watch the following video clip Click here to refresh his/her memory of how to organise data in a Carroll Diagram.

Step 3:  Finally, you may wish to give your child the opportunity to play an online game that has to do with sorting numbers and shapes in a Carroll Diagram Click here
