Lesson Duration:
60 mins.
What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
At the end of these set of activities you will be able to: 1. Identify and draw series and parallel circuits. 2. Set up simple series and parallel circuits. 3. Describe the characteristics of series and parallel circuits.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Task 1: ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND CIRCUITS
Go back to the previous lesson. By now you have learned about different electrical components and different types of circuits. You may learn about more electrical components in the following short video.
Task 2: SERIES AND PARALLEL CIRCUITS
We can group electrical circuits into two different types: Series or Parallel Circuits.
Access the following link. Revise the main points covered so far (follow steps 1 – 5).
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zsfgr82/revision/1
The main points so far are the following:
In a SERIES CIRCUIT all electrical components come one after the other. If a lamp breaks, the circuit is broken and all components stop working. The current is the same everywhere in a series circuit. If you add more lamps, the lamps will be dimmer. The following diagram shows a simple series circuit and its circuit diagram.
In a PARALLEL CIRCUIT different electrical components are connected on different branches of the wire. If a lamp breaks, the lamps of other branches keep working. The lamps stay bright if you add more lamps in parallel. The following diagram shows a simple parallel circuit and its circuit diagram.
Task 3: MORE ON SERIES AND PARALLEL CIRCUITS
Now follow the video on series and parallel circuits.

Task 4: ANSWERING SOME QUESTIONS
Download resource 1_SERIES AND PARALLEL which shows some diagrams and examples related to series and parallel circuits. Then download Resource 2_ANSWERS_SERIES AND PARALLEL to check your work.
