In this lesson, we explored the historical context of the Atlantic slave trade and its connections to the Enlightenment period, which advocated for the idea that all individuals should be treated equally under the law. The discussion highlighted how British merchants were significant players in the slave trade, transporting enslaved Africans to the Americas, which greatly boosted Britain’s economy and contributed to the Industrial Revolution. The lesson also addressed the growing public opposition to slavery in the 17th and 18th centuries, leading to new groups forming in Britain that campaigned for the abolition of slavery and improved conditions for enslaved people. A video was presented to illustrate these developments and the changing perceptions surrounding slavery.
