What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

Students will reflect on the fact that as they grew they started to be allowed to do more things on their own. Physical development and its link to healthy food is also tackled, as is an awareness that as one grows older one will change even further.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

The lesson will start by watching the clip “Action songs for kids The singing Walrus”. This will serve as an energizer where students can clap their hands, stamp their feet, jump and shake, amongst other things.

The clip is also about happiness and so students can reflect on what makes them happy (like the singing chicken in the clip) and also mention an occasion when they were very happy, explaining why.

Students are then to look at page 8 (Maltese version) or page 6 (of the English version) of the workbook (Or use the relevant pages available in Resources section of this lesson) and fill in the lines, helping them to reflect on how they are today allowed to do things they were not allowed to do when younger. They are also to reflect on their future, which will also see many more changes and new responsibilities.

Students are then to be made aware that to live they need to lead as healthy a life as possible. Students are then shown the clip “Are you hungry”.

After viewing the clip the students can then discuss the messages the clip gives regarding one’s personal choices and emphasis needs to be made on the fact that they can play a part in their own health by opting for healthy food when given the opportunity to do so.

Following this discussion the students are given the two pages of the handout “Healthy Eating Handouts”, (available in Resources section of this lesson) reflect on the food pyramid and fill in the exercises.

Next, students are to go through the word search on the following page of the workbook and try to figure out the 3 words at the bottom of the page (Pastizzi, Pizza and Pasti/ Cheesecakes, Sweets and Pizza).

Following this, students are reminded about moderation and that they need to remember the food pyramid when decided what to eat. This is followed by watching the clip “Ice Cream Once in a while song”.

Students will then answer the Yes or No questions on the following page of the workbook, which should help them reflect on future changes they will experience. They will also need to think about two questions about their future, one which will have a Yes answer and the other a No answer, since some things will not change by time.

Finally, the students will be given some work to do, These consist of an interview/short set of questions (to fill in as per workbook) asked to their parent or carer, to a boy or girl who is two years older than they are and finally to an elderly person. Students will then discuss their findings in the next lesson.
