What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

In this lesson we are going to locate the major areas of the tropical rainforest biome and we are going to examine the main characteristics of the equatorial type of climate.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Step 1
Look carefully at this map which shows the location of the major places having a tropical rainforest biome.

Step 2
Now on the map of the world mark the places that have a tropical rainforest biome: the Amazon, Congo and Indonesia.

The map entitled ‘Places having a tropical rainforest biome’ is available in the resources section.

Check your work using the map entitled ‘map with labels’ (in the resources section).

Step 3
In which continent are the following rainforests found:
a. Congo?
b. Indonesia?
c. the Amazon?

Step 4
Use the climate graph of the Equatorial climate found in the resources section.
The graph shows the average rain and temperature during the year.

You should already know how to use a climate graph.
The following videos will help you revise how to read and interpret a climate graph.

Step 5
Now that you have revised climate graphs, look carefully at the climate graph of the Equatorial climate and answer the following questions:

a. What is the average temperature in January?
b. What is the average temperature in July?
c. Does temperature change much throughout the year or does it remain the same?
d. Is there a cold season in the Equatorial climate? Why?
e. What is the average rainfall in December?
f. What is the average rainfall in July?
g. How does the rainfall vary throughout the year?

Step 6
Mention in brief the main characteristics of Equatorial climate.
The following website can help you:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zscsmnb/revision/1    Click here

The climate graph will also help you to list the characteristics of Equatorial climate.

Step 7
Why do places with Equatorial climate have a high level of precipitation all year round?

The following websites can help you:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zc7hwxs/revision/5        Click here
https://theos.in/science/reason-for-high-rainfall-in-rainforests/     Click here

Step 8
Watch this video explaining about convectional rain in Equatorial areas:

Look at the diagram entitled ‘convectional rain ’. The diagram is available in the resources section.

Write the numbers of the diagram about convectional rain near the correct information found below.

a. In the afternoon there are heavy showers.
b. Air cools and condensation takes place.
c. The sun warms the land since early in the morning.
d. Thick storm cloud of cumulonimbus type forms.
e. The warm and humid air rises.
f. The sun evaporates the water from the trees, lakes and rivers.
g. The sun warms the land.

Step 9
Explain why places with equatorial climate have high temperatures all year round.
The diagram latitude and temperature will help you answer this question. The diagram is available in the resources section.

Step 10
Check your work using the pdf entitled ‘Equatorial climate ANS’ (in resources)
