What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

The objective of this lesson is for children to understand that pets need to be cared for, just like humans.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Step 1
Ask the child the following questions:

How does your family take care of you?
Can you think of some things that you need to live a healthy and happy life?
Do you think that pets need the same things that people need?
Can you mention some things that human children need but pets don’t need?

Step 2

Activity: Who needs the following – pets, people or both?
Pet food
Fresh water dish
Veterinarian
Exercise/Play
Healthy people food
Love/Affection
pet brush
hairbrush
Pet bed
Comfortable bed
Doctor

Explain that pet needs are very similar to our needs, and that pets rely on us to satisfy those needs to ensure they live happy, healthy lives. For example, ask the child what he/she does when he/she is hungry. Obviously he/she goes to either the fridge or cabinet for a snack. Our pets, however, cannot do this task themselves, so they depend on us to take care of this need for them.
