What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
Lesson Objectives: • To explore the question of violence and the different positions taken about its use, distinguishing its aggressive use from its use in self-defence and identifying the moral boundaries of self-defence. • To reinforce yet again the case against bullying which has been made and consolidated repeatedly through the whole Ethics programme since Primary School.

Step 2:
What was happening to Deidra?
Who got to know and how?
What was the first action the father took when he learnt of his daughter’s bullying?
When those concerned did not take any specific action to stop the bullying, the father took further action. This eventually led to the father of the bullies losing his job. We might say, “Serves him right!” However, loss of job could have life-changing consequences, even on those who had nothing to do with the case of racist bullying, such as the mother, and other siblings the twins might have had. How far do you think Deidra’s father’s action were justified?
Was there any other road he could have taken?
Step 3:
Deidra’s father did not use physical violence to rectify the situation. However, he humiliated the boys and their father, as much as the boy had humiliated his daughter. He defended a victim of bullying. Was the action disproportionate to the boys’ acts or do you think he was morally justified in behaving in such a way?
Concluding activity
Do we have a moral duty to defend the victims of bullying in whatever form? Elaborate by writing around 50 words about the subject.
