What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

Lesson Objectives: β€’To explore the notion of freedom generally as freedom of action and choice; β€’To explore the notion of freedom together with those of dependence and respect for the rights of others; β€’To deepen the exploration of the relationship between freedom and the need for rules.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Step 1: Think!
Imagine such a situation: Your entire class is told that it has been chosen to go on a plane trip halfway around the world to India. But your plane has engine trouble over the Pacific, and tries to make a forced landing on a deserted tropical island. The plane crashes. Your entire class survives unharmed but are the only survivors. You now have to decide how you are going to live on the island.
What would your initial feelings be?
Since you do not know whether, or when, you will be rescued, what do you think you would want to do?
Would you rather go on your own or would you prefer to remain with your class?

Step 2:
Let’s imagine that you decide to remain with the rest of the class. How would you organise yourselves?
1. Do you think you can live without rules?
2. If rules are needed, who will make them?
3. What rules would you choose for your community?
4. Who would be the rule-makers?
5. What rights would be guaranteed by your rules?

Concluding activity
Based on your replies to the above questions, draw up a β€˜Constitution’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UzKD8rZCc0) which ensures that during the time you spend on this island, everyone is treated fairly and everyone’s rights are protected.
