What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
Lesson Objective: To deepen the exploration of the relationship between freedom and the need for rules.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Step 1: Think!
Watch this YouTube video about Freedom to recapitulate what was tackled in previous lessons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw93VYLZ93U
Step 2:
As you can see, freedom does not mean the right to live as and do what one pleases, and that as human and social beings we have an obligation to respect the rights of others, and that this means recognising the obligations and duties we owe them.
Read the first part of Sinbad in the Valley of Diamonds.
• If you were entirely alone, like Sindbad when on ‘his’ island would you need to follow any laws?
• If not laws, would there be any kind of moral code that you would have to follow or stick to?
• Or could you, like Sindbad supposes, do whatever you wanted?
• Is Sindbad right to suppose that with no one around he is free to do what pleases him?
• To what extent do laws and moral codes depend upon other people?
• Can you think of anything it would be wrong to do even if there were no other people to worry about?
Step 3:
After having thought about the above questions, answer the ones below. Look up any terms you do not know.
• Are there any moral codes regarding animals that we may have to consider?
• What about the environment? Are there any moral codes regarding the environment that we may have to consider?
• What are laws?
• What are laws for?
• What is a moral code?
• What is a moral code for?
Concluding activity
Write about 100 words about how there is no freedom without rules and without respect for rules. You can refer to examples of the games you play with your peers, or other examples you deem fit.
