What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
Lesson Objectives: β’ To extend the studentsβ skills and abilities to examine arguments and to write their own arguments and reflections on selected topics or issues on narratives or case studies set for them. β’ To introduce students to and to explore the moral issues that concern the prevention of life, namely contraception and abortion.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Step 1: Think!
Abortion is a topic that garners support or condemnation. It is a topic which can instill various emotions in people and there are many facts through which it can be discussed β religious perspectives, feminist perspectives, medical ones. Some might be totally against abortion, whatever the circumstances, others might be against the idea of abortion in general, but would be in favour in special circumstances such as abuse or if the life of the woman is in danger. Still others might argue that it is the woman alone who must decide what to do, and would support her choice whatever decision she takes.

Step 2:
Read the handout outline the pro-choice and pro-life arguments.
Reflect on these questions
β’ Do the unborn have a right to life?
β’ Is the right absolute? If you think it is, why, if you think it isnβt, why not?
β’ If not, who should have the right to decide, and until which stage of their life?
β’ Should the mother have a right to decide? Why?
β’ If yes, in which circumstances?
β’ What happens when the motherβs right to life conflicts with that of the unborn child?
β’ Who should decide if a choice must be made about who will live?
β’ What should happen if the motherβs health is seriously compromised by her continued pregnancy? What are the motherβs rights in the circumstances?
β’ What happens when the life in the womb suffers from a condition of very serious disability? Is there a right/duty to terminate it? Why yes, why not?
Concluding activity
Go back to the FB mentioned in Step 1 of this lesson. Choose one argument that a group brought forward. Argue your stance on it β you could be for, against or indecisive β it does not matter. The most important part is that your arguments are valid, clear and well presented
