What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
Lesson Objective: To further explore the ethics of dependence, family rights and obligations of care, respect and obedience owed to parents.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Step 1: The Golden Rule
Watch these two short videos about the golden rule:
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Pn0wplZmLs
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvCmqH8zHp8
Step 2:
What does The Golder Rule mean to you? When you follow the Golden Rule, you are being respectful and considerate of others and yourselves. How can this be applied to the experiences of how we live within our family?
Create a list to show how your family shows respect to each other AT HOME.
Step 3:
You are expected to obey your parents and respect their authority. Why? Is it just because they are older than you? What draws you to obeying and respecting your parents, more than, say an adult acquaintance?
Interesting point to focus on: When we say that parents have authority over their children, what do we understand? Is authority understood the same in all cultural contexts? Can you explore what different cultures have to say about parental authority?
Step 4:
Case study: Samira lives at home with her parents and two brothers. The siblings are expected to do their share of housework, since both parents work long hours. Their parents are quite strict but at the same time they also take time to listen to their children and discuss issues with them. One of Samira’s brothers, Malik, had become very lazy and instead of doing his share of the housework, he would go out to play with his friends. Samira would tell him to help out, but his reply would be, “Our parents can afford to pay someone to do the housework, why should I do it?” Finally, Samira became very angry and told her parents. They decided to reduce Malik’s pocket money, until he did his share around the house. Malik was very angry, and told them that they were denying him his right of having pocket money, as well as treating him like a slave.
Answer these questions
1. What are your views on having to help around the house?
2. Are parents wrong if they insist that their children do their share of the housework? Why?
3. Why were Samira and her brothers obliged to help around the house?
4. Malik complained that his parents earned enough to employ a person to clean the house. For this reason he felt that he was justified in not contributing to housework. What are your views?
5. What do you think of the parents’ decision to reduce his pocket money?
6. If you had to apply the Golden Rule to this case, how would the story be? Why?
Concluding activity
Draw/write a short paragraph/create a poster/ etc. to illustrate your understanding of the concepts of caring for and respecting members of their family who have the authority, responsibility and right to care for you.
