What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

Lesson Objectives: • To extend the notion of a friend to classmates; to get the children to see their classmates as friends. • To introduce classroom friendship as a special kind of relationship based on the perception of the class as a community.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Step 1: Think!
Note to supervising adult: The child is to explore the aspect of the classmates being their friends. The child is going to explore this aspect of friendship more widely and deeply. The questions below should create a discussion, which is the first step towards the exploration of relationships in the classroom between members who regard themselves as a moral community.

• What does it mean to be a friend?
• What do friends do together?
• What kind of friends are you class-mates?
• In what ways are they different or similar from your other friends?

With whom do they play?
What do they play?
What happened to Blue one day?
How do you think it felt?
How did he feel when he saw Yellow?
What happened when they hugged?

Now think about these questions:
1. Do you think that you need to become exactly like your best friend?
2. Do friends have to have things in common? What things?
3. Is it better for friends to be like each other or different from one another?
4. Is having friends important to your being happy?
5. What happened when ‘little blue’ hugged ‘little yellow’?
6. Why didn’t papa and mama blue recognize ‘little blue’?
7. When mama and papa blue think that green is not “little blue” were they right?
8. How did the parents realize what had happened?
9. Can you think of a situation where things are not the way they look?
10. There is a saying “seeing is believing” What do you think this means? Do you agree?

Concluding activity
Can you think of a situation when you thought a certain way but when you found out more about the thing you changed the way you thought about it?
