How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Step 1:
Watch the video The Hueys in a new sweater: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk0xC6L9pKM
Ask:
What was particular about the Hueys?
What did Rupert do?
What did Gillespie do?
What did all the Hueys do?
How did they look?
What did Huey do then?
What happened afterwards?
Step 2:
Ask the child to draw a few Hueys as they are in the story, i.e. all are the same.
Once they are ready make a collage with them.
Ask:
• How do you think Rupert felt about the fact that everyone looked the same, thought and
did the same things?
• What did Rupert decide to do to be different? Why?
• Why do you think did he want to be different?
• What happened when he put on his new sweater? Was he still different?
• What happens if everyone were the same – think the same, behave in the same way,
dress the same, look the same?
How would you feel living in such a place?
Is such a place possible at all?
Concluding activity:
Can you make Rupert happy by drawing a few different Hueys?
Once you are done make a collage with the drawings and compare it to the first collage you did. Which ones are nicer? Why?
Note to supervising adult: From the child’s responses create a discussion emphasising the importance and need for individuality and difference.
