What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

Lesson Objective: To explore the tension between demands of the community and individual freedom in the making of the self

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Step 1: Think!
Are there any groups you identify with due to qualities or due to aspects of your identity? Such groups could be based on – gender, language, belief, place of birth, activities you participate in and so on. Do you know others who you would classify in any of your groups?

Step 2:
Were they born into these groups (e.g. nationality) , or put in them (e.g. religion, sports etc)? Do you change your behaviour depending on who you are with? E.g. Does your behaviour change if you are with the group you pray with when compared to the group you practise sports with?

Do you belong to different groups at different times?

Step 3:
Reflect on the different groupings. What did you notice regarding your behaviour and your attitudes in different groups? How does it feel to belong to a large group? What about small groups? If you think of yourself as being in class, and the students are classified according to groups they belong to, would you ever be on your own? Why is that? And how does this make you feel?

Think about the experiences of health care, education, the police, leisure facilities. If you look at newspaper reports, or perhaps your own experience, how are people belonging to different groups treated? What can you learn from the experiences of these people?
Concluding activity:

Think about these questions:
How do you behave towards those from different groups, and how do others behave towards them? Does everyone get the same treatment? Is different treatment the same as discrimination?
