What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

Lesson Objectives: To explore to greater depth the distinction between intrinsic and instrumental value as it applies both to human and non-human life and to introduce the principle that other persons, human beings, must never be used only as means, and always treated as ends. To further reinforce the idea that moral difference is the fruit of cultural and religious difference and must be understood in this way for the sake of tolerance.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Introduction

Have a look at Slide 4 on the PPT presentation. Rate each in order of acceptability (give a 1 to the most acceptable and a 5 to the least). Explain why you rated the first one and the last one in that way.

Step 2:
Now look at Slide 5
• What can you see?
• Using the images, explain what you think is meant by the term ‘Sanctity of Life’.

Once you have written you idea of what sanctity of life means, watch this short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhn6KJgZKiI

Step 3:

Read this short note: The sanctity of life refers to the belief that life is sacred (holy), and that it belongs to God. Many people of faith believe this, and that in its general absolute form the sanctity of life doctrine makes it morally wrong to kill any living being.

Step 4:
Reflect on the questions on slide 8. Try to answer each one, supporting your views with reasons.

Step 5:
The right to life is extended to all living beings, then it is morally wrong to kill any living being not just humans but also animals, insects and plants also. But should we view all life as the same, and should we value all beings because they live?

• Why do you think/say that?
• Can you support that statement with evidence?

Note that some people, vegetarians, vegans, and animal rights activists oppose slaughtering animals for food or to use their pelts for decoration, or in experiments.
What is your opinion, in view of the sanctity of life doctrine?

Concluding activity
Sum up in 10 words or less what is meant by the “sanctity of life” doctrine.
