What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
Lesson Objective: To introduce the students to the notion of a right to life and to the issues it raises, to teach them how to reflect on these issues and how to discuss them responsibly.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Step 1: Think!
Does Death make Life more meaningful? (The Humanist Perspective)
Imagine you are at a graveyard. How does it make you feel? About what does it make you think ?
Do you find it spooky? What can you see? Is there anything that you can’t see? (Skeletons? Ghosts? Memories?) Does it make you feel sad, afraid, or anything else?
Step 2:
Questions
Which idea do you find scarier: the existence or non-existence of an afterlife. Why?
How do you think you would they feel nearing the end of your life? How would it feel if you were sure this life was all we have?
Imagine instead what it would be like to live forever. What would it feel like? Exciting? Boring? Amazing? Meaningless?
Step 3:
Humanists believe that death is the end of our existence and this is the only life we have. Evidence is important to humanists when deciding what to believe and they see no good evidence that we live on after we die. The only life we can therefore be certain of is this one.

Do you think the absence of an afterlife makes this life more meaningful?
Which would be more meaningful: a finite life or a life that went on forever?
How might not believing in an afterlife affect the way you live your life?
