What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

Lesson Objective: To introduce the students to the notion of a right to life and to the issues it raises, to teach them how to reflect on these issues and how to discuss them responsibly.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Step 1: Think!
The meaning and value of human life are defined differently between different cultures and religions, and also between religious and humanist outlooks that are sceptical of the idea of an afterlife. These differences of outlook account largely for the differences and disagreements that quickly surface when these questions and others like them arise.
As an introduction work out the handout in resources.

Step 2:
Watch this video to get a general humanist perspective on the value of life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ASKV7Wg2jE

Step 3:
Watch this video to get another perspective on the value of life – if someone is terminally ill, does one have the right to die? We will not discuss this at the moment, but you will get a different perspective on the value of life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IsloHmKvWA

Concluding activity
Now that you have heard other opinions, if you had to go back to the set of questions you attempted at the beginning of the lesson, would you revise them? Why?
