What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
Students will reflect on how many animals can be our pets, on ways of taking care of pets and the negative consequences of not being responsible.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
The students will first of all try to guess which animal is each body part linked to. (Flashcards animal body parts needs to be printed and cut out.) This will be used to start a discussion on the fact that different people choose different pets and the possible reasons why they do so (lack of space, company, more energy or greater commitment that certain animals demand, ex dog has to be taken for daily walks whilst goldfish or cats do not) etc),
Students then try to work out the worksheets “Looking after pets”. Discussion is to be made on the needs of each animal for it to be happy and well cared for, bringing along the fact that animals are like us and too have needs. One can then check answers using the “Looking after pets answers”.
Students can then watch the youtube clip of the dog that was abandoned. Discussion must give importance to how the dog was feeling, to the actions of the owner and students should also be asked to think about a happy conclusion to the story. (If they cannot come up with one then one can say that the 3 boys who appear towards the end of the clip decide to take care of the dog themselves.)
To conclude, students are to be given the “Year 4 PSCD Pet Week colour in”. There are 7 pages in all. Students are to colour in one daily, reading also the messages at the bottom of each page. On the final day of the “Pet week” they can then draw and give colour to their own picture.
