What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
Students will learn that notes can go up and go down. They will also learn a song about the importance of washing their hands.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Step 1:
Watch these panda cubs playing on a slide.
Step 2:
Download the PowerPoint, titled Up and Down. Slides 2 to 5 show that notes can go up and go down, like the panda cubs on the slide. Slides 6 to 11 quiz your child on recognising whether the notes are going up or going down.
Step 3:
Watch this video and listen to this major scale. Listen to and watch how the notes go up and then go down. Watch this video again and ask your child to hum along (join in with them).
Step 4:
Listen to the song Happy Clean Hands (the featured video on the right).
Step 5:
Download the lyrics to Happy Clean Hands and sing along with the video. Tell your child that when we sing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 the notes are going up; when we sing 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 the notes are going down.
Step 6:
Sing the song again, with the actions.
Step 7:
Download the two PDFs, titled Notes Going Up and Notes Going Down. Point to one of the worksheets and ask your child if the notes are going up or going down. Repeat with the second worksheet.
Step 8:
Ask your child to colour in the boxes with the note names C, D, E, F, G and G, F, E, D, C. Please note that your child is not expected to learn the names of these notes; the aim of the lesson is for students to be aware that notes can go up and go down.
