What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

Students will learn the names of some common musical instruments and listen to how they sound.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Step 1:
Download the PowerPoint, titled Musical Instruments, which contains pictures of the eight instruments we are going to learn about today. Go through the PowerPoint, a slide at a time, asking your child if they know the name of the instrument. The name will appear on a second click. Ask your child to repeat the names of the instruments they didn’t know.

Step 2:
Download the PDF titled Musical Instruments (which contains two colouring sheets). Ask your child if they can name the instruments. Help when needed.

Step 3:
Help your child to write the names of the instruments, writing over the dots.

Step 4:
Ask your child to colour in the instruments.

Step 5:
Watch the Sesame Street video, Music School: Murray Has a Little Lamb (the featured video on the right). Tell your child to listen carefully to the sounds of the instruments.

Step 6:
Watch the video again and ask your child to name each instrument as they appear in the video.

Step 7:
Ask your child which instrument is their favourite.
