What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
By the end of the lesson, children can understand that plants are important to humans and other living things.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Resources:
• Video – 10 Mind blowing facts about the amazon rainforest
• Game – Plant parts cards or IWB activity
ENGAGE
Show different photographs of a place with no plants. Elicit how would these places be different if there were plants? What are the benefits of having a green environment? Elicit that plants give us good air, they provide shade, they are habitats for other living things and we can also eat some plants.
INQUIRE
Ask the children whether they have heard of the Amazon rainforest and what they know about it. Elicit the meaning of rainforest (a place, typically where it rains a lot, with a lot of trees and animals).
The Amazon rainforest is in South America and covers most of northwestern Brazil. Reference may be made to an online map. The Amazon river flows through the rainforest which is home to many different plant and animal species.
Children will now watch the video – 10 Mind blowing facts about the Amazon rainforest. In groups they will list different interesting facts they learnt about in the video.
Discuss that some parts of plants can be eaten (are edible). Ask the students whether they know of plants that can be eaten.
Game – Plant parts
Give out different cards showing fruit and vegetables and different parts or do the matching game on the IWB. Children match the fruit and vegetable plants to the part of the plant that we eat e.g. tomatoes – fruit; onion – bulb; leek – leaves; asparagus – stem; carrot – roots; sprouts – buds; sweetcorn – seeds; cau-liflower – flower.
ASSESS and EVALUATE
Create a whole class display with all the benefits of plants including edible parts.
Cross-Curricular Links:
Literacy:
Reading factual material.
Using oracy skills to elicit information and share research findings.
Mathematics:
Recording plant growth.
Using measuring equipment to calculate amount of liquid needed for plant growth.
Expressive Arts:
Explore creative ways of displaying research.
