What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
The students will reflect on the life cycle of certain creatures and that humans too grow up and will change by time. Students will also reflect on how much they have changed since birth. Pregnancy in humans is also highlighted, as are some basic keywords, as indicated on page 21 of the workbook. Students are also reminded about Helpline 179.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
The lesson of today starts with the “Life cycle of a frog song” which introduces the idea of the life cycle of living things.
Using pages 16-22 of the Year 5 Sexuality and Relationships Education (SRE) workbook, copies of which in English and Maltese version are available in the Resources section of this lesson, students reflect on how frogs, pets and humans change and develop by time. The placing in correct order exercise on page 16 is to be done, and this is then followed by the viewing of photos of each student at different times of their lives, as per page 17 of the workbook.
Students are then introduced to pregnancy in humans , with the students using the illustration to discuss the issue. They are to write down a comment in the dialogue box too.
After this introduction students watch the clip “Mummy’s got a baby in her belly” and students then comment on the clip after watching it.
Students then look at the illustrations on page 19 and also go through the keywords needed to fill in the empty spaces regarding pregnancy. Students can also go through the 6 points on page 21 which summarise the points raised in the workbook and others of importance to the students. Students are then to be reminded that in case they need help they can speak to a trusted adult or phone on Helpline 179.
Lesson and topic is concluded by watching “Aiden’s Surprise”, that deals with the birth of a new child in the family.
