Lesson Duration:
40 mins.
What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
Agility – students shall explore ways to change of direction of movement without thinking ‘how’. Coordination – students shall explore ways how to combine motor actions. Speed – students shall work to improve their coordinative capacity of reaction. How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Equipment Markers, hurdles, balls, cones.
Brief Introduction Crocs & Kangas (class is divided in two teams):
2 end-zones are marked by coloured cones at opposite sides of a large playing area and a line of cones are placed halfway down the area. The class is divided equally into 2 teams. The teams should line up against each other at the halfway line, facing a player from the other team. Each team choose an animal’s name like for example Crocodiles and Kangaroos. Then the teacher calls out one of the team’s name and if the respective teams’ name is called they must turn and run to their end zone before getting tagged by the other team.
Variations: The players may wait at the halfway line in different ways – lying face down, balance on 1 leg, on all 4’s with hands and feet touching the ground. Also instead of tagging, the teacher may have each player tuck a bib into their shorts to hang like a tail and players must pull out the tail in order to tag.
Skills & Activities Hurdle drills (class is divided according to the number of hurdles available):
1. Hurdle acceleration drill – Sprint through the hurdles, landing one foot between each pair of hurdles.
2. 2-foot hurdle acceleration drill – Sprint through the hurdles, landing two foot between each pair of hurdles.
3. 2-foot hurdle hops – Hop through the hurdles using 2 feet, trying to bounce on the front of your feet as fast as you can.
4. Single foot hurdle hops – Hop through the hurdles on 1 foot, trying to bounce on the front of your foot as fast as you can.
5. Weave drill – Start next to the first hurdle, with the line of hurdles on your right side. Run forward between the two first hurdles and backpedal between the second and third hurdle. Clear the remaining hurdles by alternating the same movements.
6. Sideways weave drill – Weave through the hurdles sideways, alternating directions after each hurdle.
Agility ladder & ball passing (same groups as in previous activity):
The students have to repeat the previous hurdle drills and after each attempt, they have to dribble the ball around the markers, trying not to touch any of them.
Closure King of the court (same groups as in previous activity):
A large square area is marked out with cones and the students find a space inside the square with a ball each. On the teacher’s signal everyone dribbles with the ball inside the square. The game’s objective is to try and kick the other players’ ball out of the square while defending your own. The last player who survives with their ball in the square wins.
