A thematic approach is adopted to help students draw connections between the information being taught and the student’s previous understanding of that same information and so learning is less fragmented. The material in the pack is organised in way to help students be exposed to language through listening and reading tasks which would then help them produce language in the speaking and writing tasks. The material is scaffolded in such a manner which should help students do some of the material independently.
The texts chosen are all authentic and the tasks are meant to be effective, purposeful, meaningful and realistic. Although language use (i.e. grammar and vocabulary) is not mentioned explicitly, it is interwoven within all the components including the four language skills and literature. The focus is, indeed, on communicative competence evident through the type of tasks chosen which mimic real and authentic contexts giving students a purpose and an audience to use English.
