During this activity students will experience sorting in groups according to a given criteria: colour. Students will also be given the opportunity to talk about the data they sorted.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
1. Prepare a set of different coloured lollipop sticks, blocks or buttons (these can be replaced with any other concrete resource). 2. Ask the students to sort the pile of lollipop sticks/blocks/buttons… according to their colour. 3. Encourage the students to talk about each group. (Example: There are 5 red lollipop sticks.) 4. Download Activity Sheet 2.1a and ask the students to draw their lollipop sticks/blocks/buttons… in the correct groups.
Extra: Download Activity Sheet 2.1b. On this sheets students are invited to sort birds according to their colours.
Extension: Tally marks can be introduced as a way to facilitate sorting of information.
