What Should You Expect From This Lesson?
At the end of this set of activities you will be able to: 1. Describe the orbit of the Moon around the Earth. 2. Refer to different shapes of the Moon as the phases of the Moon. 3. Describe what happens during a solar or a lunar eclipse.
How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:
Task 1: Draw one diagram of the Moon in the night sky. Use a different piece of paper and ask other members of your family to draw again another diagram of the Moon. Compare these drawings. Possibly you have come up with different shapes of the Moon. Do you know why this is so? Follow the first video to understand the movement of the Moon around the Earth. This movement is called THE ORBIT OF THE MOON. Picture 1 shows the orbit of the Moon around the Earth. How long does it take to make one whole orbit? This video also gives an explanation of the different shapes of the Moon. These shapes are called THE PHASES OF THE MOON.
.
Task 2: Follow this video. Use a torch and a small ball to create a model of the Moon orbiting the Sun. Going round the Sun (your torch) you will be able to observe the phases of the Moon. You may need some adult help. This model works better in a dark room.
.
Task 3: Use your model (see task 2) and observe what happens when the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth. Follow the shadow of the Moon…you may observe that at times this shadow falls on Earth. This is called A SOLAR ECLIPSE. During a total solar eclipse the Sun is completely covered by the Moon and thus the sky goes dark. Picture 2 describes a solar eclipse.
On the other hand, the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon when the Moon is on the other side of the Earth. This is called A LUNAR ECLIPSE. Picture 3 describes a lunar eclipse.
Follow this video to understand better how a solar and lunar eclipses are produced.
.
This video describes some interesting facts related to a recent solar eclipse. Through actual footage you will be able to understand how an eclipse is brought about.
