What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

At the end of this set of activities you will be able to 1. describe that cells are the basic unit of life. 2. identify a typical plant and animal cell as seen under the light microscope. 3. draw and label typical plant and animal cells as seen under the light microscope. 4. state the function of the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, vacuole and chloroplast

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

[Lesson 2 of 9

Step 1: Think:
What is our body made up of?
What happens when we grow up?
What happens when we get hurt and a scab develops on the broken skin?
Ask at home, and gather information about this. Do the other members at home agree with your thoughts?

Step 2: Study
Follow the slides attached: Animal and plant cells to learn about cells.
Observe and compare the structure of the animal and the plant cell. Can you observe that the plant cell is more rectangular? What differences can you observe between an animal and a plant cell?
Look at your skin, the skin of your pet or the leaves of a plant at home. Can you observe these cells? : OF COURSE NOT; these cells are microscopic.
Look at an adult at home. Is he or she still growing new cells? When are new cells formed?
Study the function of each part of the cell.
See that you can understand the function of the nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm in animal cells.
See that you can understand the function of the nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole, cell wall and chloroplasts in plant cells.
Follow the attached link to revise the animal and plant cells. Work the online exercise in this link.

Step 3: Work out Animal and Plant cells Worksheet 1 attached.

Step 4:
Structures inside the cell, such as the chloroplasts and the nucleus are called organelles. These organelles can move about in the cell inside the jelly-like cytoplasm. Watch this you tube video to observe chloroplasts moving around in a plant cell.

Crafty activity…. Print the attached Plant cell Craft worksheet. Cut the different parts and use them to build a colourful diagram of the plant cell. Label your plant cell. Check that you have 6 labels. Check that you know the function of each of the labelled parts.
Now watch the video; it takes you inside the leaf, where there are many structures and organelles used by the plant to carry out photosynthesis.
