What Should You Expect From This Lesson?

At the end of these set of activities you will be able to: 1. Use basic electrical components to build different circuits. 2. Use electrical symbols to represent a circuit. 3. Explain how switches can be used to control circuits.

How To Carry Out This Lesson At Home:

Task 1: ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS
We do assume that you have already followed the LESSON 5.01…especially the YouTube video about circuits. Check that you know the symbols used for simple electrical components. This lesson is completely dedicated to electrical circuits.
NEVER PLAY WITH ELECTRICITY FROM THE MAINS SUPPLY. We are always using electricity produced from small batteries.

It would be ideal if you have some basic electrical components available, that is, some wire, bulbs, holders and batteries. If not, you may use the link shown in task 3 to build some circuits.

Follow this video about building circuits and drawing circuits using electrical symbols. Note that at times you may came across a different symbol for a bulb than the one used in lesson 5.01. To light a bulb you always need to have a complete (closed) circuit. Current will only flow through a complete circuit. An incomplete (open) circuit will not allow current to flow.

Task 2: BUILDING YOUR CIRCUITS
Download Resource 1_ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS and build basic circuits as shown. Try different combinations, such as, adding another battery or adding another bulb. Observe what happens to the brightness of the bulbs when you add another battery or bulbs.
Switches can be used to allow or stop a current from flowing in circuits. You may create a switch by breaking off one of your wires. Try changing the position of the switch in circuits shown in diagram B of resource 1. Observe what happens when you put the switch in different positions.

Task 3: BUILDING ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS ONLINE
Use the following link and build some electrical circuits as shown in resource 1.
