Performances of REPUBBLIKGĦANA in Schools
The first performance of Repubblikgħana was held at St. George Preca Primary School in Valletta on Wednesday 14th January and was very well received by Year 5 and 6 students in attendance. Students engaged enthusiastically throughout the performance and had an opportunity to ask questions and interact with the actors at the end of the show.
The newly commissioned work, Repubblikgħana, created by Teatru Malta for Fondazzjoni Ċelebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali (FĊN), is specifically designed for delivery in schools across Malta and Gozo. It offers young audiences an appealing presentation of how Malta became a Republic, told in a semi-folk, semi-contemporary way, using the musical art forms of Maltese għana and rap. The project is directed and scripted by Jeremy Grech, with the musical composition and arrangements by Justin Galea.
Targeting students in Year 5 to Year 8, and designed as a luggage show, this short performance can be set up in any available performance space within schools. Participating schools will also receive an educational pack with resources in order to prepare the students for this performance and to offer ideas helping the youngsters to reflect further about Maltese history.
